Azog first became an enemy of Thorin Oakenshield, when in a Battle of the Dwarves versus the Orcs, he beheaded Thorin's grandfather, Thror, then king of the Dwarves. In rage, Thorin cut off Azog's arm, and he was believed dead, but he was alive, and replaced his hand with a blade.
When he heard of Thorin's quest to reclaim Erebor, he constantly followed him and made several attempts to kill him, but failed.
During the Battle of the Five Armies, Azog killed Thorin's nephews, Fili and Kili and also battled Thorin himself. He had an advantage over Thorin, but Thorin held his ground, foiling all his attempts. But, in a sneak attack Azog managed to stab Thorin with a blade, but with the same blade Thorin soon killed Azog, bringing an end to his reign.
- He always wanted to kill Thorin himself, thus leaving many chances of letting other Orcs killing him.
- His son's name was Bolg. He too, persished in the Battle of the Five Armies.
